Murray, Sepe, Howard win in Rockville Centre village election

Rockville Centre residents elected Francis X. Murray to succeed Mayor Mary Bossart, ending her tenure after a single four-year term. Murray, of the RVC United Party, garnered 3,060 votes, 62 percent, to 1,705 for Bossart, of the Concerned Citizens Party, in unofficial results released Tuesday night by the village. Michael Leboff, a 20-year-old college junior who ran as an independent candidate for mayor, received 142 of the 4,907 votes cast for mayor.

Two trustee seats were up for grabs as well in an at-large election. Michael Sepe of RVC United captured one, with 3,060 votes, and Nancy Howard, also of RVC United, took the second seat, with 2,927. They defeated one-term incumbent David Krasula and Michelle Sewell of Concerned Citizens, who received 1,755 and 1,670 votes respectively.

Lynbrook mayor undergoes surgery

Mayor Bill Hendrick, who was hospitalized for heart problems in April and released last month, underwent triple bypass surgery on Tuesday morning, as the Herald went to press.

Village officials said that Hendrick has been back in the hospital since June 17, when he felt ill. Doctors were waiting for his heart to strengthen before operating, Deputy Mayor Alan Beach said last month.

As reported in the May 5-11 issue of the Herald, Hendrick was rushed to Winthrop University Hospital with heart trouble and an infected spleen on April 27. He spent several weeks there while doctors monitored his condition, before releasing him to rest and build his strength up at home.

Long Beach surf competition to include a mix of music, fashion and action sports

“I’m stoked to be here,” Quiksilver CEO Bob McKnight told a crowd of hundreds in Times Square on June 16. McKnight was on hand to announce, among other things, that when the Quik-

silver Pro New York competition comes to Long Beach on Labor Day weekend, the first Association of Surfing Professionals world tour event ever held on the East Coast will be broadcast nationally.

“We’re going to bring high-level energy out here with the best surfers in the world, and combine it with art, music, fashion … all kinds of stuff,” McKnight said. “We couldn’t be happier, so bring it on.”

Meadowbrook School students do good work

Students at East Meadow’s Meadowbrook School did good deeds when they worked to collect, box and donate items to be shipped to our troops serving abroad. The East Meadow Fire Department came to the school on June 20 to load the boxes of goods on a fire truck to be bundled and shipped to the soldiers, who will, no doubt, be glad to get them.

Hit and run in Franklin Square

Naresh Singh, 21, of North Baldwin, was arrested after he tried to outrun a New York State Police officer while driving his Nissan on June 20, at 11:12 p.m. According to police, the officer was attempting to stop Singh for speeding — he was going 91 miles per hour in a 55-mile-per-hour zone — on the Southern State Parkway, near exit 15 (Corona Avenue).

Singh exited the parkway and turned three times, in an attempt to outrun the officer, then made a U-turn and struck the police vehicle. The officer, whose vehicle was disabled due to the accident, then contacted the Nassau County Police Department, who located Singh in Franklin Square shortly thereafter and arrested him.

Central seniors celebrate at graduation

Much was the same about this year’s Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District graduation ceremonies on Sunday. Seniors came attired in their caps and gowns –– blue robes for Calhoun, green for Kennedy and red for Mepham. Excited parents showered their now adult children with flowers and balloons, and snapped hundreds of photos.

But much was different –– for starters, the venue. For the first time, Central District officials moved the ceremonies from the high schools to the NYCB Theater at Westbury, formerly the Westbury Music Fair. The theater, Central officials noted, accommodated many more family members and friends of graduates than did the football field bleachers at the high schools.

In all, the theater seated 2,000, allowing the Central District to distribute up to six or even seven tickets to the ceremony per senior, as opposed to the usual four. The theater was also indoors and air-conditioned, so there was no worrying about the weather. And the sound system was superb, officials said, allowing the three high schools to put on full-fledged concerts amid the festivities.
